Toyota Verso MPV 1.6 VVT-I T2

For:
Spacious, flexible seating system does away with need to remove seats. Good safety provision.

Against:
Noisy under acceleration and at speed. Ride is hard; optional MMT gearbox is sluggish.

Performance

The 1.6 and 1.8 petrol engines struggle for pace, particularly at motorway speeds. This is worsened when you opt for the slow-changing MMT manual transmission, which does away with the clutch pedal. Two 2.2-litre diesels develop 134bhp and 175bhp, and offer above average performance.

Ride & handling

The Verso is a relatively adept handler, and responds quickly to steering inputs. Body roll is fairly well contained and grip is plentiful. The downside is that the ride quality is too firm and occupants can be bounced around over bumpy road surfaces.

Refinement

As well as having to work the petrol engines fairly hard to extract any meaningful performance, you'll be well aware that you're doing so. All are vocal as you accelerate up through the gearbox, and at cruising speeds each provides a droning soundtrack. Matters are only slightly better at town speeds.

Buying & owning

As well as pitching the Verso competitively against rivals on basic list price, Toyota claims the all-new car will spend around 38% less time being serviced over a typical 62,000-mile ownership period than the previous version. Low emissions make the Toyota affordable for company users, while all engines are reasonably frugal.

Quality & reliability

The Verso is built at Toyota's plant in Turkey, a factory the company says matches the production standards attained by its Japanese plants. All of the car's plastics are solid and well assembled and feel like they will stand up to family usage. As with any Toyota, reliability should not cause any concern.

Safety & security

The car is constructed with Toyota's Minimal Intrusion Cabin System, and the Verso has earned a five-star Euro NCAP crash test rating. There are also nine airbags fitted as standard, including the first knee airbags in the class. Stability control is only an option on the base trim. All models come equipped with an immobiliser and electric steering lock.

Behind the wheel

Reach- and rake-adjustable steering combines with a multi-way adjustable seat to make finding a good driving position easy. The dash is clear and easy to read, while steering-mounted controls for the stereo and cruise control (where fitted) make them simple to operate. The rest of the dash is easy to negotiate and well constructed.

Space & practicality

Toyota's Easy Flat-7 seating system allows the middle row and two rear seats to be folded flat. The middle seats can also slide when raised to vary the emphasis between passenger space and luggage room. The rear seats are really for children only, although adults could use them for short trips if centre-row occupants sacrifice some legroom.

Equipment

Every version has air-conditioning and steering-mounted audio controls as standard. T3 and T Spirit cars have climate control and alloy wheels, while the T Spirit gets rear privacy glass and Toyota's ICE system as standard, incorporating a DVD player and headrest-mounted screens. SR models have privacy glass, front and rear parking sensors, cruise control and 16-inch alloy wheels.
