Nissan 350Z Coupe V6 309bhp

For:
Every inch the tyre-shredding muscle car. The 350Z provides barrel-loads of poke and a thrill-a-minute driving experience.

Against:
Limited practicality and running costs likely to be high.

Performance

The Z is every inch the tyre-shredding muscle car. Power comes from a bloodcurdling 300bhp 3.5-litre V6 engine which drives the rear wheels via a slick-shifting six-speed manual gearbox, helping it to sprint from rest to 60mph in seven seconds. The 350Z also provides prodigious low- and mid-range grunt.

Ride & handling

Although there's masses of grip available, the 350Z isn't as nimble as many rivals when hustling through a series of fast bends. The ride is firm but compliant and the steering weights up nicely as speeds increase, providing plenty of feedback.

Refinement

There's plenty of road noise at speed and the growling twin-pipe exhaust roar rises to an ear-splitting crescendo as the revs climb. That said, the aural experience is totally in keeping with the Z's charging sports coupé character.

Buying & owning

The 350Z is competitively priced for such a red-blooded sports car. Limited supplies and high demand should keep residual values strong, but running costs will be high, too. Carbon dioxide emissions put it in to the highest company car tax bracket, while its average fuel economy is just 24.8mpg. Insurance costs will also be high.

Quality & reliability

Nissan has worked hard to make the Z's interior a match for the Audi TT's, and it certainly looks the part. While it's immaculately constructed, not all of the materials are up to the same standards, but it is appealing nonetheless. Nissan has a fine reputation for mechanical reliability and we don't expect the 350Z to let the side down.

Safety & security

To prevent accidents occurring, the 350Z comes with a stability control system and anti-lock brakes. Should the worst happen, there are twin front, side and curtain airbags to protect passengers. Deadlocks and an alarm are fitted as standard, so the Nissan should do well at deterring thieves.

Behind the wheel

The driver's seat is well bolstered to provide plenty of thigh support under hard cornering, but a cut-away side bolster frees up elbow room to aid access to the gearshift. There's also a bank of steering column-mounted instruments that moves in unison with the steering wheel adjustment to ensure a clear line of sight and help provide the perfect driving position.

Space & practicality

The driver and front passenger have plenty of head and leg space, but a girder-like strut which straddles the two rear suspension turrets to add stiffness not only makes the Z strictly a two-seater, it also seriously reduces useable cargo space in the boot.

Equipment

The 350Z is plushly kitted out, and features 18-inch alloy wheels, climate control, xenon headlamps, electric front windows, remote central locking and a CD multichanger. The optional GT pack adds electrically adjustable and heated leather seats, cruise control and an upgraded stereo system. Options include different alloy wheels and orange leather upholstery.
