Nissan Micra Hatchback 1.2 Initia

The Micra looks distinctive, it's good to drive, it's easy to park and it's well made.

Against:
Tall passengers may feel that rear headroom is too limited, and the boot could be bigger.



Performance

Entry-level Visia models are available with only a 64bhp 1.2-litre petrol and the 160SR with a 108bhp 1.6-litre. Acenta and Tekna are available with a 79bhp 1.2-litre petrol, 88bhp 1.4-litre petrol or 85bhp 1.5-litre diesel, while Active Luxury comes with a choice of the 1.4- or 1.6-litre petrols.

Ride & handling

The Micra's ride is firm and a little bumpy, thumping over drain covers and bouncing around town, but it's stable enough and able to cope with motorways. The steering is responsive, but the Nissan can't match the best cars in the class for fun or composure.

Refinement

The Micra's petrol engines rev sweetly, but the cabin isn't quiet, especially on diesel models. Road noise is also a bit of a problem, but wind noise is well managed.

Buying & owning

The Micra represents good value for money, thanks to its low prices and impressive equipment lists. Long-term resale values can't quite match those of cars like the VW Polo, but fuel, insurance and company car tax bills are low.

Quality & reliability

The Micra's doors shut with a rather tinny clang, but the majority of the interior materials feel solid and well-assembled. Judging by the company's excellent record, your Micra should prove to be sturdy and reliable.

Safety & security

Front and side airbags, seatbelt pre-tensioners and active headrests are fitted to every model, but stability control is only standard on the top-end 160R and Active Luxury models. A keyless entry system and immobiliser are standard across the board.

Behind the wheel

The Micra's steering wheel adjusts for height only, and the flat seats have a limited range of height adjustment, but the driving position is excellent. All-round visibility is superb, thanks to the large glass area, and controls are easy to use, thanks to a clear and simple layout.

Space & practicality

Both front-seat passengers are extremely well catered for, but the curved roof means rear headroom is restricted. The rear bench slides to switch between legroom and boot space, but in the forward position, there's no legroom and still not room for masses of luggage.

Equipment

Entry-level Visia trim comes with a CD player, electric front windows, power steering and remote central locking. Acenta adds Bluetooth phone connectivity, steering wheel-mounted stereo controls, electric door mirrors and air-conditioning, while Tekna trim brings automatic headlights and wipers, alloy wheels and reversing sensors. 160R has stability control, as do Active Luxury along with Alcantara upholstery, heated front seats and climate control.
