Peugeot 407 SW 1.6 HDi 110 S

For:
A wide range of engine and trim choices, including strong, refined diesel engines. It looks distinctive and is spacious inside, with plenty of kit provided as standard.

Against:
The 407 SW is not as roomy as many rival estate cars, and shares the saloon's unsettled ride and awkward driving position.

Performance

The 407 comes with four turbodiesels: a 1.6-litre engine, two 2.0-litre units (the more powerful of which comes only with an automatic gearbox) and a 2.2 that is available only from stock. Of these, we prefer the lower-powered 2.0-litre unit with a manual gearbox - it's good enough to make the 2.2 seem redundant. The only petrol engine is a 2.0 'Bioflex' unit with 140bhp designed to run on E85 bioethanol fuel, but that is available only from stock.

Ride & handling

Like the saloon, on which it's based, the SW feels a little too firm over poor surfaces at low speed. Things improve the faster you go, but the ride still isn't as supple as the best in class. There is plenty of grip through corners, but the 407 SW feels slightly cumbersome and the steering is overly light and unresponsive.

Refinement

Most of the time there's no problem with the SW's refinement. Road and wind noise are generally well contained, although there is a little more wind noise at motorway speeds than in the saloon. The engines are smooth and refined.

Buying & owning

The 407's turbodiesel engines are impressively economical: the 1.6 HDi averages more than 50mpg, meaning cheap fuel bills. The 2.0-litre isn't thirsty, with an average of 49mpg, while the 2.2 drops to 46mpg.

Quality & reliability

The 407's cabin has a smart appearance, and the assembly is solid, so it should stand up well to family use. We expect the engines to remain relatively trouble-free, too, as they use proven technology.

Safety & security

The 407 is hard to fault on either count. Every model comes with twin front, side and full-length curtain airbags, as well as a driver's knee 'bag under the steering column. Anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, an alarm and deadlocks are also fitted as standard across the range.

Behind the wheel

The driver benefits from a wide range of seat adjustment and a reach- and rake-adjustable steering wheel, it can still be difficult to juggle everything to get a perfect driving position. The centre console also has too many buttons, which can make it confusing to use.

Space & practicality

The SW's higher roof liberates extra headroom over the saloon. Rear passengers have plenty of space, but the SW lags behind rivals such as the Mazda 6 and Vauxhall Vectra estates for luggage capacity. The boot, though, is a neat, square shape, and the rear seats fold to leave an almost-flat floor. The front passenger seatback folds down, so long loads can be carried, and the tailgate has a separately opening window.

Equipment

All versions of the 407 have climate control, electric front windows, a CD player and cruise control; SR versions add alloy wheels, Bluetooth phone connectivity, satellite navigation, and rear electric windows. Sport versions have alloys, front and rear parking sensors and part-leather upholstery.
