Toyota L'cruiser Amazon 4x4 4.2 TD

For:
The Amazon is superbly built and luxurious. A spacious rival to the Land Rover Discovery; good to drive on Tarmac and talented off-road.

Against:
Because of the sheer size, it's not easy to manoeuvre around town. Fuel costs could also be prohibitive, and many buyers favour better on-road manners to ultimate off-road ability.

Performance

While no-one can pretend the big Toyota is a ball of fire, it's no slouch. Making a car this heavy move swiftly is no mean feat. You have the choice of a 4.7-litre V8 or a six-cylinder 4.2-litre turbodiesel, which has more pulling power lower down in the rev range.

Ride & handling

Around town, there's no getting away from the sheer size of the Amazon, and the large turning circle doesn't help things. Variable power steering makes parking easy, but it lacks feel at higher speeds. The ride can match more prestigious rivals' and the handling, while uninspiring, is safe and predictable, without excess body roll.

Refinement

The Amazon's impressive refinement means it deserves the Lexus badge it wears in some countries. There's little wind noise at motorway speeds, and the petrol engine is whisper-quiet while cruising. The diesel can get a little raucous when pushed, but it's far from unbearable. Just as impressive is the slick, smooth four-speed auto gearbox.

Buying & owning

Big engines mean big bills, and even the diesel struggles to make 25mpg, so carbon dioxide emissions put both of the Amazon engines in the highest band for company car tax purposes. But, while the purchase price is quite high, Amazon residuals are good, particularly for the diesels, which keep more than half their value after three years.

Quality & reliability

The Amazon's build is first-rate and the wood and leather of the top-spec models lend it an air of luxury matched by few rivals. It's tough enough to withstand most things thrown at it, and reliability is assured as long as it's maintained well.

Safety & security

Every model has twin front airbags and anti-lock brakes, plus side airbags in the front and full-length curtain airbags. There's an alarm, but it's a shame deadlocks aren't available as a stronger deterrent to thieves.

Behind the wheel

The only word to describe the Amazon's driving position is commanding. You sit way above average saloons, surrounded by Lexus-like luxury, so the view is superb. All cars have steering that is adjustable for both rake and reach and a height-adjustable seat, so the driving position is good and comfortable, with lots of head- and legroom. All Amazons have leather seats.

Space & practicality

Accommodation is as lavish as you would expect. Only if the front seat passengers have their chairs set right back will any one of three middle row passengers moan about legroom. You can accommodate up to seven, but the rearmost positions are quite cramped. However, they are removable to leave a reasonably well sized boot, and the middle row splits 60/40.

Equipment

The standard kit list looks more like a luxury car's, and includes alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, cruise control, a CD multichanger, electric windows front and rear, electric seat adjustment and leather upholstery. The 4.7 V8 has a standard auto 'box that's an option on the 4.2 turbodiesel model.
