The all new, 2016 Prius achieves its greatest improvements in efficiency and performance yet, with CO2 emissions as low as 70g/km and an average fuel consumption from 94.2mpg. Innovations to the hybrid powertrain are central to achieving this including the development of the 1.8-litre VVT-i Atkinson cycle petrol engine to produce a world-best 40 per cent thermal efficiency.
Elsewhere in the vehicle many major components have been redesigned or revised in order to reduce weight and improve efficiency. The 2016 Prius uses a new more compact and denser nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery producing better performance and minimizing the space it occupies, in fact the battery is now located entirely beneath the rear seat to avoid any compromise in the boot capacity of the vehicle.
