Skoda Superb Saloon 1.8T Classic

For:
This is a lot of car for the money. Equipment levels are high and the cabin is cavernous and well built. The ride is smooth and soaks up the bumps.

Against:
Because it's geared towards comfort, the Superb is not an enthralling drive. The steering is uncommunicative and body control is poor. Some of the smaller engines struggle.

Performance

Petrol power comes from 2.0, 1.8 turbo or 2.8 V6 engines. All three are smooth, although the lesser engines can struggle to pull along such a weighty car. Better choices are the 1.9-litre turbodiesel now with 115 or 130bhp, the 140bhp 2.0 TD or the 2.5 V6 TD, all of which provide much more muscle.

Ride & handling

The Superb feels its size, due to a soft suspension set-up that's geared towards comfort. While it soaks up small bumps well at low speeds and wafts along on smooth surfaces, the Superb wallows through corners. It also gets the wobbles over crests; uncommunicative steering doesn't help matters.

Refinement

Levels of engine noise on the 1.8T and 130bhp diesel are low at cruising speeds, but the 130 makes itself heard under hard acceleration. Road rumble is well suppressed, but wind noise is too noticeable around the side windows and pillars at national limits. The controls and gearshift are smooth, however.

Buying & owning

Superb buyers get plenty of car for their money. Fuel economy and carbon dioxide emissions aren't great for the petrol engines and the V6 diesel, but the 1.9 turbodiesel is impressively frugal. Residuals are reasonable, but you'll lose heavily on the most expensive models.

Quality & reliability

One of the Superb's strengths is fine build quality, with good panel fit and a solid, sturdy interior that uses decent materials. Under the skin, most of the mechanicals are shared with the Volkswagen Passat, so they should prove hardy and long-lasting.

Safety & security

Standard anti-skid brakes and twin front, side and curtain airbags mean safety equipment levels are very good, if not quite up with the best in the class. Traction control is found on all but the 2.0 and 1.8 T models. Security features are plentiful and effective, however, and were able to keep our attack-testers out.

Behind the wheel

A design very similar to the old-shape VW Passat means everything is easy to read and conveniently placed. Two-way steering wheel adjustment and driver's seat-height adjustment are standard, so getting comfortable is easy. Visibility is also fine. All cars now feature a redesigned dashboard, plus new headlights and a fresh grille.

Space & practicality

For family car money, Superb buyers get executive-car levels of space. Headroom all round is excellent, while rear-seat passengers get an incredible amount of legroom. There's a massive boot that features a handy storage device on higher-spec models to stop smaller items rolling around, as well as plenty of useful cubbies in the cabin.

Equipment

Four trim levels are available - Classic, Comfort, Elegance and Laurin & Klement. A CD player, four electric windows and air-con are all common features, while Comfort models include climate control, a CD multichanger and parking sensors. Elegance trim includes extra chrome exterior trim, electric seat adjustment and part-leather upholstery. Laurin &Klement gets full leather trim wood interior trim and larger wheels.
