Mark Shemilt from Westover ŜKODA has been named ŜKODA’s top Diagnostic Technician in the UK for the third consecutive year. He learned the good news at ŜKODA’s recent ‘Retailer of the Year’ event, held at the Royal Lancaster Hotel overlooking London’s Hyde Park.
He will now compete in an international final, taking on the best ŜKODA technician from each of 50 countries around the world.
In 2016 Mark took second place in the international final – the best result the UK has ever had in the competition.
This year’s final – which is being held in Barcelona in April – will see the top technician from each country take part in two days of competitive diagnostic tasks (which usually involves unravelling and fixing four complex diagnostic faults). They will also sit a written paper and complete a workshop systems task. The prize for the winning technician is 4000 Euros towards a holiday.
“This is the last time I can enter the competition (you’re not allowed to enter more than three times in a row), so I’ll definitely be aiming for first prize,” says Mark. “We had an amazing night out at the Retailer of the Year ceremony, complete with a delicious meal, VIP trip to see Cirque du Soleil at the Royal Albert Hall and a luxurious overnight stay. I can’t wait for Barcelona. It will be a demanding but thoroughly enjoyable few days and, as it’s the last time I can enter, I’m going to give it my best shot but also enjoy every minute.”
Born and bred in Blandford, Mark has been a technician at Westover ŜKODA for 12 years and a Master Technician – the highest possible level of technician - since 2012. He joined the showroom’s workshop team as an apprentice.
“We’re all incredibly proud of Mark and so pleased that his phenomenal ability and commitment have been recognised again,” says Dan Jenkins, Westover ŜKODA Brand Manager. “To win the UK element of this competition once - let alone three times in a row - is a massive achievement, especially as there are around 130 ŜKODA dealerships across the UK. He’s a real asset to the team and everyone here wishes him the very best of luck in Barcelona.”
As part of the final judging process Mark completed five assessments, including challenging practical and diagnostic assignments. He was also tested on his knowledge of ŜKODA and its 100-year history.
In addition to working on customer vehicles, Mark also mentors Westover ŜKODA’s technical apprentices and advises the workshop’s newer technicians.
