Fighting off competition from top ranking ŜKODA technicians across the globe, Mark Shemilt has been awarded second place in ŜKODA’s international search for a Diagnostic Technician of the Year.
“To be named the second best ŜKODA diagnostic technician in the world is no mean feat - this is a remarkable achievement and we’re incredibly proud of Mark,” says Paul Dillon, Westover Group Joint Managing Director. “It was impressive enough to see off technicians from the other 127 ŜKODA showrooms across the country but then to do the same on a global basis is something else.
“We hope technicians across the Westover Group – of which there are now 115 - will be inspired by Mark’s success. Certainly our customers can be even more reassured that their cars are being serviced by the very best technicians around!”
Mark won the national ŜKODA Diagnostic Technician title in November last year and went on to represent the UK at the international finals, held in Prague in the Czech Republic – ŜKODA’s birthplace - earlier this month (June 2016). As well as a trophy and plaque, Mark won 2,500 Euros to spend on a holiday.
“We went to Prague for a week and had an action-packed time,” says Mark. “After some sight-seeing – which included a river cruise and a brilliant segway sight-seeing trip of the city, as well as a visit to the ŜKODA factory and museum - the finalists all took part in two days of challenges. There were three practical exams, during which we were watched closely, and a written paper designed to test our knowledge of the ŜKODA brand.
“The whole trip was an amazing experience. One of the highlights for me was meeting the UK team – they were a fantastic bunch and we had great fun together.
“I just couldn’t believe it when my name was called out at the winners’ ceremony but now that I’ve had time to digest it, I’m still feeling overwhelmed.
"It’s a big thing when someone tells you that you’re one of the best in the world at your job – definitely a moment I’ll always remember!”
Mark has been a technician at Westover ŜKODA for 10 years and a Master Technician – the highest possible standard a technician can be - since 2012. He joined the showroom’s workshop team as an apprentice.
In addition to working on customer vehicles, Mark also mentors a technical apprentice and advises the workshop’s newer technicians.
