Three Škoda models were highlighted as best buys at the 2011 What Car? Awards, held at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel on Thursday 13 January.
The Octavia 1.2 TSI SE was best buy less than £15,000 in the small family car category, while the Octavia Estate 1.4 TSI SE was best buy less than £16,500 in the estate cars section. In the family car category, the Superb 1.4 TSI S was named best buy less than £18,000.
The judges had plenty to say about the Ocatvia’s 1.2 TSI petrol engine at the awards, citing this as the main reason for the car’s best-buy award: “What gave the Octavia the edge over its rivals this year was the introduction of the brilliant new 1.2 TSI petrol engine. You need to experience it to believe just how smooth and flexible it is. There’s also the lure of a diesel-rivalling 49.6mpg.”
Talking about the Octavia Estate they said: “Since 2007, nothing has managed to surpass it in terms of space, driveability and value,” before going on to describe the Superb as: “Such an enormous chunk of car that you could be forgiven for thinking you’ve turned to the luxury car section by mistake.”
The biggest award of the night, What Car? Car of the Year 2011, went to the Audi A1.
