Renault Mégane CC 1.9 dCi 130 Dynamique

For:
Glass roof stows in the boot at the touch of a button, allowing up to four people to enjoy the sun. Equipment is generous and it's refined and comfortable.

Against:
It's definitely a cruiser rather than a sports car, and the electric steering feels numb. Boot space is limited roof-down.

Performance

There's a broad engine line-up, ranging from 1.4 to 2.0 litres, and from 80bhp to 165bhp. The 1.6 petrol and 1.5 turbodiesel reward a relaxed driving style, as does the 1.9 turbodiesel, which also provides strong acceleration and cruising ability, while the 2.0 petrol has plenty of punch. The pick, at a price, is the new 1.9-litre diesel.

Ride & handling

The Coupe-Cabriolet is a civilised cruiser, but it's not much fun. The soft ride, which keeps you comfortable over long motorway journeys, results in plenty of body lean when you reach the bends. The electric power steering is also devoid of feedback. With the roof down the Mégane shudders over potholes and rutted surfaces.

Refinement

The 1.6 petrol and 1.5 turbodiesel engines are vocal when extended and noticeable even when cruising at motorway pace, but the others are less intrusive. There's some rear suspension thump on poor surfaces, and wind noise becomes apparent from about 60mph, but by class standards, the Megane is quiet.

Buying & owning

List prices are low, and operating costs should follow suit. Easy repair of minor knocks helps keep insurance premiums down on most models, while good fuel economy and low emissions figures help business users. The 1.6 petrol and the 1.9 diesel attract lower tax bills for company drivers than the 2.0 petrol.

Quality & reliability

Quality materials, soft-touch surfaces and excellent trim fit and paintwork point to the efforts Renault has made, and in our latest reliability survey the French manufacturer put up a good showing, so all bodes well.

Safety & security

The low insurance ratings afforded all Meganes attest to Renault's efforts on both counts. Deadlocks combat theft, and top versions have a keyless entry and starting system. Every model gets an alarm. Twin front and side airbags are standard, but some versions don't have stability control.

Behind the wheel

The driver sits high, but there's two-way steering adjustment to make it easy for all to get comfortable. Forward vision is fine, but there are blindspots over the shoulder and to the rear. The controls are well laid-out and easy to use, but the five-speed 'box in smaller-engined models is slicker than the six-speeder fitted higher up the range.

Space & practicality

The back seats are just about useable if your passengers are Lilliputian in proportions, but don't try squeezing full-grown adults in there. The boot is large until the roof folds into it - then there's just enough room for three average-sized weekend bags.

Equipment

Every model has an electrically folding glass roof. Base-level Extreme has a radio cassette player, alloy wheels and body-coloured heated door mirrors. Dynamique trim adds air-conditioning, lumbar adjustment on the seats and the option of an automatic gearbox with manual override. Top-spec Privilà¨ge adds climate control, a CD multichanger and part-leather upholstery.
