Renault Laguna Sport Tourer 2.0 dCi 150 Dynamique

For:
A superb family or fleet car. Pleasant and comfortable rather than exciting to drive, with excellent specification and a superb safety reputation.

Against:
It offers less cargo space than the best rivals and engines need to be worked hard, which is a handicap in a laden estate.

Performance

The range starts with a 135bhp 2.0-litre, followed by 170- and 202bhp 2.0-litre turbos which offer swift progress. A smooth 3.0-litre V6 with an auto gearbox tops the range. The diesels are of 1.9 and 2.0 litres delivering up to 175bhp, though the 150bhp version has the best balance of benefits.

Ride & handling

The Laguna strikes a good balance between crisp handling and a smooth ride. It's very stable on all roads thanks to firm control of body movements, while it rides town bumps and potholes comfortably and quietly (though not on the optional 17in wheels). More steering precision and feedback would be welcome, however.

Refinement

The Laguna does a good job of isolating most of the noises that grate on long journeys. Even though you have to work some of the engines hard to make good progress, they are all fairly hushed, and though there's some wind and road noise, it's never excessive. Smooth controls and solid trim add air of refinement.

Buying & owning

The Laguna's leasing rates are among the lowest in the class, while modest CO2 emissions strengthen its appeal for company car drivers. Fuel bills will be low, so long as you avoid the V6, and resale values are respectable. Maintenance and insurance rates are average and there's a three-year, 60,000-mile warranty that comes with six years' anti-rust and three years' paint coverage.

Quality & reliability

Laguna owners reported a depressing number of engine gremlins, misbehaving air-con systems and problems with the interior in the 2004 JD Power Customer Satisfaction Index. This, added to poor reports of dealer service, placed the Laguna 110th out of 127 cars surveyed.

Safety & security

Almost the complete car in both respects. It has the full gamut of features to help keep thieves out and make it easy for the police to identify it if stolen, though we overcame the saloon's deadlocks. four airbags plus side curtains, anti-lock brakes and a strong shell have helped made it Euro NCAP's first five-star crash car.

Behind the wheel

The latest Laguna is a little smaller than the largest family estates and this is reflected in the cabin's slightly cramped feeling. That apart, it's easy to get a good driving position in the classily trimmed and well built cabin, and there's plenty of oddments space. Rearward vision is a bit restricted.

Space & practicality

Renault has moved away from the boxy utilitarianism of the old Laguna estate to offer a prettier - but less spacious - lifestyle wagon. And there's no seven-seat option any more. But it's still a roomy and versatile estate, with fair rear passenger room and a more-than-adequate boot.

Equipment

Renault has gone way beyond the obvious, equipping the Laguna with rarities like tyre pressure sensors and keyless entry and starting. All versions have a full range of active and passive safety kit, air-con and a CD player and most have an electric sunroof.
