Performance

The 407 comes with five turbodiesels: a 1.6-litre with 110bhp and 180lb ft of pull, a 2.0-litre with 136bhp and 240lb ft - available only as an auto - a 2.0-litre with 140bhp and 240lb ft, a 2.2-litre with 177bhp/277lb ft, and a 2.7 with 205bhp and 330lb ft, available as an auto only. All models come with particulate filters as standard. The only petrol engine is a 2.0 'Bioflex' unit with 140bhp designed to run on E85 bioethanol fuel.

Ride & handling

At low speeds the 407 feels a little too firm, especially on poor surfaces. Things improve the faster you go, but the ride still isn't as supple as the class best. There is plenty of grip through corners, but the 407 feels slightly cumbersome and the steering is overly light and unresponsive.

Refinement

Road and wind noise are impressively subdued, making the 407 a relaxed long-distance machine. The engines stay calm when cruising and only make themselves heard when revved hard. Some diesel grumble is audible at town speeds, but the engines aren't coarse.

Buying & owning

The 407's turbodiesel engines are impressively economical: the 1.6 HDi averages more than 50mpg, meaning cheap fuel bills. The 2.0-litre isn't thirsty, with an average of 49mpg, while the 2.2 drops to 46mpg and the 2.7 manages 33mpg.

Quality & reliability

The 407's cabin has a smart appearance, and the assembly is solid, so it should stand up well to family use. We expect the engines to remain relatively trouble-free, too, as they use proven technology. However, in the 2010 JD Power survey, owners criticised the car for its below-par build quality.

Safety & security

It's hard to fault the 407 in either respect. Every model comes with twin front, side and full-length curtain airbags, as well as a driver's knee 'bag under the steering column. Anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, an alarm and deadlocks are also fitted as standard across the range.

Behind the wheel

The 407's awkward driving position is one of the worst aspects of the car. Despite steering wheel adjustment for depth and angle, and driver's seat-height adjustment, it's still not easy to get comfortable. All of the major controls are well positioned, but the centre console has a profusion of buttons that are confusing to use.

Space & practicality

Peugeot has stuck with a saloon shape for the 407, so it can't match the versatility its hatchback rivals offer. However, there's decent space for four adults, and three can fit across the rear seat. Rear headroom is tight for those over six-feet tall, but kneeroom is generous. The boot is large and suffers no suspension intrusion.

Equipment

All versions of the 407 have climate control, electric front windows, a CD player and cruise control; SR versions add alloy wheels, Bluetooth phone connectivity, satellite navigation and rear electric windows. Sport versions have alloys, front and rear parking sensors and part-leather upholstery.
