Nissan X-Trail 4x4 2.0 dCi 148 Aventura

The X-Trail is a fine drive, with a comfortable ride, composed handling and excellent refinement. The interior is solid and practical, and it's more capable off-road than many of its rivals.

Against:
Rear seat space or access isn't as good as some. Entry-level cars miss out on other models' more advanced four-wheel-drive system and stability control.



Performance

There are two four-cylinder petrol engines; a 139bhp 2.0-litre unit and a 167bhp 2.5-litre motor, but 90% of buyers will go for one of the 2.0-litre diesel models. Each is impressively flexible, although the 171bhp version has more low-down pulling power than the 148bhp engine. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard for all versions; the petrols have optional CVT transmissions, while the lower-powered diesel is available with a six-speed automatic gearbox.

Ride & handling

The X-Trail is geared more towards passenger comfort than driving pleasure, with suspension that provides a comfortable ride over any surface, yet allows a fair degree of lean through corners. There's decent grip, and the steering is well weighted, if a little short on feel. All models have a selectable four-wheel-drive system, while the top two trims feature hill-descent and hill-start systems.

Refinement

The X-Trail's bulky shape creates some wind noise at speed, but it's one of the most refined compact 4x4s around. Road and suspension noise is subdued, and the diesel engines are smooth and quiet, even when worked hard. The manual gearbox shifts neatly between ratios, too.

Buying & owning

In common with its rivals, the X-Trail won't be as cheap to run as an equivalent family saloon, but each of the diesel engines returns almost 40mpg and carbon dioxide emissions are competitive for the class. It's not cheap, but decent discounts should soon be available on the X-Trail's list price and we expect it to hold its value reasonably well.

Quality & reliability

Although the X-Trail's cabin is rather dour, the quality of the plastics and build is generally impressive and everything has a reassuringly solid feel. It's too early to assess the long-term reliability of the latest model, but the previous one achieved a mid-table finish in our 2006 JD Power customer satisfaction survey. Owners didn't rate the dealer service highly, however, and many suffered from engine problems.

Safety & security

Every X-Trail comes with front, side and window airbags. All have the reassurance of four-wheel drive, but the base model misses out on the stability control and hill-descent system fitted to the rest of the range. Deadlocks are fitted as standard.

Behind the wheel

Most drivers will be comfortable in the X-Trail. The steering wheel moves for reach and height, while the driver's seat is supportive and provides a good range of height adjustment. Thick pillars hinder the rear view slightly, but the view forward is excellent and raised lumps on the headlights help you to place the front of the car. A rear-view camera is optional on higher-specification models.

Space & practicality

The X-Trail provides decent space for four adults, but rear legroom isn't as generous as some rivals' and a central passenger sits with their feet either side of a raised floor section. The boot is very practical, however; it's large and its two handy underfloor areas are easy to access. You can fold the rear seat flat, but you need to flip the base and remove the head restraints first.

Equipment

The X-Trail is available in three trims: Trek, Sport and Aventura. Even the cheapest version has climate control, alloy wheels, Bluetooth connectivity and four electric windows. Sport trim adds stability control, an upgraded four-wheel-drive system and larger alloy wheels, while Aventura features leather upholstery and an electrically powered driver's seat.
