Nissan Navara Pick-up 2.5 dCi Double Cab

For:
The Navara's strong engine and large load bay are key attributes. The Double Cab can seat five in comfort, too.

Against:
There's a fidgety ride, and some disappointing interior plastics. The rear of the King Cab version is very cramped.

Performance

Navara buyers are only offered one engine, and this 172bhp 2.5-litre unit is the most powerful diesel in the pick-up sector. On-road performance is strong, and there's more than enough muscle for it to dismiss heavy loads or haul you up muddy slopes. An automatic gearbox is available with top-end versions, but the standard six-speed manual is a better option.

Ride & handling

The Navara's road manners fall short of the best lifestyle 4x4s, but are a big improvement over pick-ups of old nonetheless. While the ride is rather fidgety, body movements are well controlled and the steering is accurate enough, if short on feel. A switchable four-wheel-drive system and low-ratio transfer box give it genuine off-road ability, too.

Refinement

The engine sounds coarse until warmed, and there's a gruffness to the note under acceleration. However, this disappears into the background once up to speed, and a tall sixth gear helps to keep things quiet at the national limit. Road roar is also minimal, but the Navara's boxy shape inevitably kicks up wind noise.

Buying & owning

Buy a Navara through your business and you'll be able to claim back thousands of pounds in VAT. Company drivers also pay a tiny amount in tax compared with regular cars thanks to the model's commercial vehicle tax status, and average fuel consumption is a respectable 33.2mpg. Other running costs are competitive, too.

Quality & reliability

Some of the interior plastics feel a bit cheap and flimsy compared with its rivals. However, Nissan has an excellent reliability record and the Navara's rugged mechanicals should stand up to everything from the supermarket car park to brutal off-road trails.

Safety & security

Unlike its Pathfinder 4x4 sibling, the Navara only receives side and curtain airbags in the most expensive trim. Lesser models make do with dual front airbags, although Double Cab versions do have ISOFIX child seat mountings as well. Deadlocks and an alarm are standard across the range.

Behind the wheel

The Navara has a distinctive, upright dash, complete with prominent metallic centre console and well laid out controls. Most people will be able to make themselves comfortable thanks to the wide range of driver's seat adjustment, but cramp can set in on long journeys. Things would be improved if the steering wheel moved in and out as well as up and down.

Space & practicality

In Double Cab form, the Navara has four conventional doors and plenty of room for five adults to make themselves comfortable. There are a host of useful cabin cubbies and the rear load area is generously proportioned. The King Cab, which has smaller rear doors that open backwards, allows even more space for loads. However, its flip-down rear seats are only really suitable for short trips.

Equipment

Base models miss out on air-conditioning, but do get remote central locking and a CD player. Upgrading to SE trim brings alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control and electrically adjustable door mirrors, while Outlaw cars come with privacy glass, cruise control, and a six-disc CD changer. The range-topping Aventura has electrically adjustable heated leather seats and satellite-navigation.
