Now for the Techical bit......There are 48 laminated, lithium-ion battery modules housed under the floor pan. These are connected to a high-performance three-phase electric motor via a static inverter and coupled to both front wheels by a Single reduction gear (think automatic), this forms the vehicle’s traction system. 

A sophisticated electronic Vehicle Control Module controls all vehicle functions, charging control and safety monitoring. The battery modules create a low centre of gravity, better weight distribution, a better turn-in ability and greatly reduced roll.  A regenerative braking system converts braking effort into electrical energy to charge the main batteries while you drive.

Range distance on a full charge:  95% of UK drivers travel less than 62 miles (100km) a day. Over 80% drive less than 31 miles a day! So, for many people the LEAF's 109-mile range will not present a problem. When the time does come to recharge, a 10 amp, home-based charge takes around 8/10 hours (depending upon battery charge level) and normallycarried out overnight.  For safer & faster charging, a 16 amp home charging unit (HCU) can be installed at an additional cost.
