Land Rover Range Rover 4x4 3.6 TDV8 HSE Auto

For:
Fabulous on-road ride and refinement for such a big car, and immense capability in the mud, yet it remains truly luxurious. Better built than ever.

Against:
It's big, as you find out when you try to thread it through urban streets or park it, and access to the rear is only mediocre. Expect huge running bills.

Performance

There are two V8 petrol engines; a 305bhp 4.4 and a supercharged 4.2 with 400bhp. The 4.4 feels a little reticent at low speed, but it soon picks up. The 4.2 is seriously quick. The 3.6-litre V8 diesel is also capable of shifting the Range Rover's substantial bulk with indecent haste. All come with a six-speed automatic gearbox as standard.

Ride & handling

Considering its abilities off-road the Range Rover does an amazing job of protecting its passengers from rutted Tarmac. It's a 4x4 limo. There's some floatiness and body roll but it's never intimidating. The supercharged V8 on firmer suspension and higher wheels isn't as soothing, but is still good.

Refinement

The Range Rover's petrol engines are smooth and quiet most of the time and aren't intrusive when worked hard. Although the diesel has a distinctive rumble at idle, it's hushed once up to speed. Road noise is well filtered out, but the Range Rover's large, upright body creates some wind noise at motorway pace.

Buying & owning

You can expect big bills whether you are a private owner or a business user. All versions fall into the top company car tax band. The engine switch from BMW to Jaguar V8 petrol power did marginally improve economy. You can now get discounts, but residual values don't suffer as a result.

Quality & reliability

Reliability was the last car's major flaw but the new model has turned that around. Mechanically the Range Rover now enjoys a fine reputation and the quality of the dashboard fittings and plastics is miles better than its predecessor's, and a match for anything else you can buy.

Safety & security

The standard safety equipment includes six airbags, anti-lock brakes and dynamic stability control. Head airbags for rear passengers are an option. A newly developed deadlock security system kept our attack testers out and it scored well in our Security Supertests.

Behind the wheel

You perch throne-like in the Range Rover's driving seat and enjoy excellent visibility and fine comfort. There's a wealth of adjustment on both seat and steering wheel, allowing drivers of all shapes and sizes to get comfortable. Major controls are simple to use but some of the smaller ones are fiddly.

Space & practicality

The Range Rover is a large car but you wouldn't know it from trying to clamber into the back through the awkward door openings. All five passengers get decent leg and head space, if not quite that of a luxury saloon. The boot has grown, though, and it retains the useful horizontally split tailgate.

Equipment

Range Rover owners can choose from four trim levels: SE, HSE, Vogue and Vogue SE. The supercharged model has its own unique trim. All come lavishly specced, with cruise and climate control, alloy wheels and leather trim. The company also offers a series of pricey option packs. Items such as satellite-navigation, parking sensors and in-car DVD players are available. Satellite-navigation and a sunroof come as standard with some.
