Land Rover Freelander 4x4 2.2 TD4 GS

The Freelander has a smooth ride, impressive refinement and is highly competent off-road. Land Rover's strong image should keep resale values high

Against:
Prices are a little steep, rivals provide more rear legroom and boot space and the dashboard is cluttered. Land Rover's reliability needs to improve.



Performance

Fans of petrol power can opt for a six-cylinder 3.2-litre unit with 230bhp, but most buyers will go for the more economical 158bhp 2.2-litre diesel. This feels a bit flat at low revs, but there's plenty of punch once the turbocharger kicks in. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard and a six-speed automatic an option.

Ride & handling

The Freelander is brilliant at ironing out bumps in the road and, although the body leans as you turn into a corner, the Freelander always feels composed. The steering is accurate, but could do with a bit more weight and feel at higher speeds. Only the base model misses out on Land Rover's Terrain Response system, which lets you optimise the car for different surface conditions via a simple rotary knob.

Refinement

The Freelander's square body and big tyres mean it's not as refined as the best family hatchbacks, but it's the quietest car in its class. Wind and road noise are muted and it's very good at shutting out suspension clatter. You're never going to mistake the diesel engine for a petrol, but most of the time it's impressively smooth and quiet.

Buying & owning

The Freelander looks a little pricey compared with some compact 4x4 rivals, but strong residuals mean you'll get a large chunk of that outlay back come resale time. The diesel averages a reasonable 37.7mpg and the petrol a less impressive 25.2mpg, while other running costs should be similar to the competition.

Quality & reliability

Land Rover has a poor reliability record, but the quality of the Freelander's fixtures and fittings give cause for hope. The dials and steering wheel are virtually identical to those in its upmarket Discovery sister car, and the cabin materials look and feel similarly robust. Wipe-clean surfaces make it practical, too.

Safety & security

Safety equipment is comprehensive, with stability control and twin front, side and curtain airbags all fitted as standard. There's also an airbag under the steering column to protect the driver's knees in an accident, while deadlocks, marked parts, an integrated stereo and locking wheelnuts all help to deter thieves.

Behind the wheel

The Freelander's high-set driving position and flat bonnet gives you excellent forward vision and make it easy to place the car on the road, but the rear screen is small. The black-on-black centre console buttons can be difficult to tell apart at a glance. However, you do get a wide range of seat and steering wheel adjustment.

Space & practicality

Front seat occupants get plenty of head- and legroom, but knee space is no more than adequate in the rear. The boot is small compared with the best rivals and suffers from wheelarch intrusion, plus its high floor means you might struggle to lift heavy items in. The rear seats do split and fold 60/40, though, and they lay usefully flat.

Equipment

Every Freelander gets alloy wheels, air-conditioning and a CD player, while GS trim adds climate and cruise control, rear parking sensors and Land Rover's Terrain Response system. Next up is the XS spec, which brings electric front seats and a better stereo. SE models come with satellite-navigation and a CD multichanger, while HSE gives you leather upholstery. HST models have different side mouldings and a roof spoiler. The cars also get 10-inch alloy wheels, privacy glass and metallic paint.
