NEW TWIN-AIR ENGINE
Only months after launching it's revolutionary MultiAir engines in the new Punto Evo, Fiat used the 2010 Geneva Motor Show to unveil what it is calling 'The World's Greenest Gasoline Engine'. Twin-Air (pictured) is an amazing new 900cc 8v two-cylinder engine that produces 25% more performance and uses 15% less fuel than the existing 1.2 8v four-cylinder engine. An alternative to the current four-cylinder 1.4 16v engine will also be available soon - this time producing a 30% improvement in fuel consumption.
CO2 emissions for the Twin-Air engine are around 95g/km which puts the car Band A for UK road tax - there is no charge for an annual tax disc for Band A vehicles so running costs for Fiat cars equipped with the new engine will be very low.
The Twin-Air engine is 23% shorter and 10% lighter than a four-cylinder engine of similar performance. Fiat say the engines size makes it ideal for petrol-electric hybrid applications and that it could be mated to a energy recovery system - something Fiat Group already has experience in with it's KERS Kinetic Energy Recovery System, developed through it's Magneti Marelli subsidiary for use in the 2009 Ferrari F60 Formula 1 car.
Clearly Fiat are committed to having Europe’s lowest average CO2 car range for the foreseeable future...

Why?
Keeping your engine running while sitting still in traffic is really inefficient. Not only does it waste fuel, you're emitting unnecessary Co2 and increasing wear and tear on your engine.
What to do?
Start&Stop technology, developed by Bosche and Fiat, helps you cave fuel and reduce CO2 emissions by automatically switching off your engine when you come to a stop. Just apply the brakes as you come to a standstill and put the gearstick in neutral once you've stopped. Your engine will then restart as soon as you press the clutch or accelerator- it's that easy. So now when you're stuck at a red light in a traffic jam, you won't consume any fuel, emit any CO2, or hear any engine noise.
Use it with eco:Drive and you'll save even more fuel when you drive. Visit the eco:Calculator section of eco:Drive to see how much fuel, CO2 and money you're saving with the Start&Stop system. Start&Stop is available on Fiat 500 1.2 and 1.4 petrol engines as an option and will soon be included on the 1.3 MultiJet engines. It will be offered in other Fiat models very soon.
